Good news! An industrial design student, Kevin Scott, 21, from De Montfort University in Leicester, Uk, might have found the answer.
Kevin took second place in the Business Design Centre New Designer of the Year Award for his invention. A collapsible bike!!! More photos and details at the London Daily Mail article. "He designed a bike that wraps around a lamp post so it can be locked-up safely - without the need for a lock or chain."
I like the idea of the two-in-one concept. I wouldn't have to worry about my bike lock or about anybody cutting it...;)

Bike thieves SUCK. Do you know anyone that has had their bike stolen with a u-lock? So far many people at my work have had bikes stolen but they were all had cable locks. I'm wondering if that is the only answer. I would be down to lobby for renewing the bike baiting program - who's with me?
My bike was stolen with a u-lock.
An Amtrak employee at the Davis Amtrak Station didn't like where I park my bike and he personally cut the lock in two and left my bike on the lawn to be stolen by the first thieve that walked by.
Now I find hard to believe that anybody is going to be walking around with the kind of tool this man used. But now I'm weary of any lock.
I'm with you on renewing the bike baiting program.
that is such a great idea. heartbreaking when a good bike get stolen.
That's effing brilliant. I've yet to have my bike stolen, knock on wood, but I can only imagine the kind of devastation I would feel if she were taken from me.
